THE MAKING OF HISTORY

THE DR. CARTER G. WOODSON BLACK HISTORY BOWL 2012

Once again, WV ABSSA has made history.  In February, 2012, Susan L. Smith, Superintendent Hancock County Schools, held the first Dr. Carter G. Woodson Black History Bowl.  The event took place at Weir High School, Weir Middle School, Oak Glen High School and Oak Glen Middle School.  The response from the students was overwhelming with hundreds of students present at the events .  The speakers for the event included Shelly B. Trice, 2008 Hall of Fame Sports Inductee and one of two surviving members of the great 1941 Weirton, Dunbar High School, Basketball State Championship Team and John R. Jackson, 2010 Academic/Legend inductee from the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind.  Mr. Trice gave a vivid portrayal of what it was like to attend a segregated school, including the fact that he had to walk 8 miles to and from school.  He also explained the importance of education and why walking all of those miles was worth it.  Mr. Jackson shared his experience of being blind and being in a segregated school.  He raised consciousness of the existence of a school for the deaf and blind, painting a picture of the strengths and shortcoming of the institution.  He also shared his experience of being the first blind student to attend public schools in Hancock County and his experience of graduating from West Virginia University with honors.  We hope to go into all of the counties in West Virginia to teach Black history.

While at Oak Glen Middle School, one of the 8th grader came up to me and said,”  I have never had a hero before, now I have three”.
